How can we help wildlife at home?

World Wildlife Day is on 3rd March 2021! It’s a day to celebrate nature, wildlife, and how it makes our world so diverse. This year the theme for World Wildlife Day is ‘Sustaining People and Planet’, so we’ve come up with some fun wildlife activities for kids to do their bit for the environment and get outside and explore the nature around them!

Feed the birds!

Attract all kinds of beautiful and interesting birds to your gardens by giving them a little extra food. They might be a little shy at first, but eventually, the extra food won’t last long! Nuts, mixed seeds, and even fruit like raisins, are perfect for giving our bird friends a little energy boost! Try to avoid foods such as bread as it can make them feel a bit poorly! (Also, feeding the birds in the winter months is great for using up unwanted food scraps, so no food is being wasted!). Why not try a bit of bird spotting and write down the different species of birds that visit your garden?

Go on a beach or woodland clean up walk

Litter is so dangerous for our wildlife with some animals becoming trapped in tangled up rubbish, or even end up eating things that are not very good for them! Going on a woodland or beach family walk is a great way to get the kids out in the fresh air, get some exercise, and encourages kids to take care of the natural spaces around them! Make sure you take some gloves and some bags to carry everything and keep your hands clean! Carry on the fun outdoors with our Let’s Explore range, so you’re able to spend even more time outside with the kids!

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

We’ve all been spending more time than ever at home this past year, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck inside! Compile a list of as many household and/or outdoorsy items as you like and encourage the kids to go explore to gather them up! You could even offer them a prize if they manage to tick off all the items! If you are looking for some great prizes, we have some high-quality premium smaller toys and games, such as our skipping rope or classic Tiddlywinks—which are perfect for allowing the fun to continue inside and out!

Help the Bees by planting flowers

Bees are so important to the natural world as they help produce ALL the food we need to survive! Give them a helping hand and somewhere pretty to collect all their pollen by planting some lovely colourful flowers, either in your garden or any pots you can find! A top tip is when the weather gets warmer, leave a little dish of water and sugar to help the bees keep hydrated!

Make a hedgehog house

Hedgehogs are some of the cutest wildlife we have in the UK, and we want to make sure we protect them by making them safe, warm places to rest, have some food and water and to raise their hoglets! You can use anything you have laying around, from bricks to wooden boxes so your hedgehog houses are sustainable as well as cosy!

At Jaques of London, we care a lot about the natural world—from your tiny tots to all creatures great and small! That’s why all our children’s toys are made from sustainable wood. These little things help to keep our planet thriving. So quality family time with our quality products does a little good for your little ones as well as the planet we live on—it’s a win-win.
