Real talk
The toy that earns its shelf space
It sits there looking right. Then your child picks it up and teaches themselves how letters sound and numbers add. The board is solid wood, the letters magnetic, the finish hand-done. You don't feel guilty watching them play because they're learning without screens.
And when they grow past it, you'll keep it. These don't break or look tired after 2 years.
Joe Jaques, Jaques of London

While they play
What your child quietly picks up
Looks like play. Works like a lesson.
Letter sounds
Placing magnetic letters teaches how they look and sound. Spelling their own words sticks it faster than telling them.
Counting and numeracy
Numbers on the board make addition and subtraction visual and hands-on, not abstract. They see 2 + 3 = 5 before they're told.
Fine motor control
Gripping small magnetic pieces and placing them precisely builds hand strength and coordination. No screens, real dexterity.
Confidence with words
When they spell a word without help, they know it. That's worth more than praise. They've made something real.

Why real play matters
Real brain growth comes from real play.
Ready from age three
At 3, they enjoy placing letters and numbers. By 5-6, they're spelling short words and counting sequences without prompting.
Plays anywhere
Magnetic pieces don't slide off in the car or on the sofa. Compact enough to toss in a bag. No batteries, no charging, no fuss.
Lasts across siblings
Solid wood and magnets don't wear out. Parents tell us their children's younger sibling plays with the same set 3 years later, no splinters, no missing pieces.

Questions & answers
Answers to what you're actually wondering
Which age is this best for?
From 3 years, it's a toy. At 4-5, they start spelling short words. By 6-7, they're writing sentences and simple addition. Buying for a 6th birthday? This is the one. One parent told us: 'perfect gift for any babies' 1st birthday' because older siblings play with it too.
Will the pieces get lost?
Magnetic pieces stay on the board until your child lifts them, so they don't scatter across the floor like loose tiles. We've never had a complaint about missing letters. They're bright, easy to spot, and designed to stay together.
How long does it actually last?
One customer wrote: 'Toys that don't break after five minutes of play.' Parents report their child playing with the same board for 3-5 years, then handing it to a younger sibling. Solid wood and proper magnets don't wear out. The finish is hand-applied to last.
When does it arrive if I'm buying as a gift?
Ships within 2-3 business days. Order by 2pm and it reaches most UK postcodes by end of week. One grandparent said: 'arrived next day, saved Christmas.' Gift-wrap is available at checkout, and it arrives in packaging parents say is the best part.
How much does it cost?
The Magnetic Letters & Numbers - Educational Toys for Kids is £16.99 today (down from £23.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.
What's your returns policy?
30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story
Making toys worth keeping since 1795.
Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.
Jaques has been making toys that teach since 1795 because we believe a child playing is a child learning. We chose solid wood and proper magnets for this board because plastic breaks and weak magnets frustrate. Every letter, every number, every surface has been thought through by makers who still handfinish each piece. Your child's hand learns through touch as much as sight. That's why this board sits on the shelf like an object that matters, not a toy that will be thrown away.
Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
