Real talk

Buy it once. It survives.

The Jaques shape sorter is the toy you buy at 1 year old and pass on at 8. Solid wooden shapes, hand-finished, weighted to feel right in small hands. No plastic to snap, no paint to chip. Our oldest sets are still teaching children 25 years after purchase.

You stop hunting for replacements. Your child stops guessing how shapes fit. Everything works the way it's supposed to.

Joe Jaques, Jaques of London

While they play

What it quietly teaches

Looks like play. Works like a lesson.

🔷

Shape recognition

Circles, squares, triangles, stars. Each shape has a name, sides, corners. Your child learns geometry by touch and sight before they can count.

Fine motor grip

Picking up, holding, aiming. Every attempt builds hand strength and coordination. No pressure, no frustration.

🧠

Problem-solving logic

Try a shape, see if it fits, try another. This is cause and effect, spatial reasoning, and persistence before a child can speak.

🎨

Colour and size

Each block is bold coloured and different sizes. Sorting teaches early maths concepts, pattern recognition, and visual discrimination.

Questions & answers

Questions from buyers who've been here

What age is this for?

Ages 1 to 3 play it hardest. A 1-year-old builds grip and shape sense. A 2-year-old races through it and gets faster. A 3-year-old invents new rules and plays with siblings. After that, it lives in the cupboard until a younger child arrives, or gets passed down as-is. Catherine McCulloch called it a perfect gift for any baby's first birthday, and she's right.

Will it actually last?

Yes. Solid wood doesn't crack the way plastic does. The paint is hand-finished and doesn't chip from normal play. We've seen sets bought in 1998 still in working order. One customer said, not the usual tat from China, John A, and that's the difference. You pay once.

How fast will it arrive?

Order by 2pm and it arrives Tuesday. We ship within 2,3 business days, and we pack it in gift-ready packaging because most orders are gifts. One buyer told us it arrived next day and saved Christmas, Leigh Hemmings. If you're buying for a specific birthday, we'll get there.

What if it doesn't work for my child?

Thirty days to change your mind. Send it back and your money comes back in 2,3 business days. We're not risking your trust on a toy. You're buying once, so you need to be sure it's right.

How much does it cost?

The Shape Sorter - Shape Sorting Toy is £19.27 today (down from £27.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.

What's your returns policy?

30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story

Making toys worth keeping since 1795.

Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.

We've made shape sorters since before plastic was cheap. The toy works because it's simple: wood is heavier than plastic, so it feels right in a small hand. The shapes are sized so a child can't jam them wrong. No frustration, no learning curve, just play. We finish every block by hand so the paint doesn't chip. That's not nostalgia, that's durability. Your child learns geometry, grip, and problem-solving while you stop buying replacements.

Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
