Real talk
The 20 minutes she didn't ask for the iPad
Your 4yo sits at the table, picks up a wooden letter, finds the matching picture tile, and says the word out loud. No screen. No batteries. No you managing the screen time. Just her, the letters, and the small triumph of spelling a word she built herself.
That's what this game does. It teaches phonics and letter recognition the way a child's brain actually learns best, by touching, moving, and saying the words out loud.
Joe Jaques, Jaques of London
What's in the box
What arrives
One solid wood set with 26 letters, colourful picture tiles, and a wooden base. Everything she needs to start learning, nothing she doesn't.
26 wooden letters
Hand-finished, easy to grip, each one shaped and sanded so a small hand can hold it steady. No splinters, no rough edges.
- ✓ Solid wood, not plywood
- ✓ Child-sized grip
- ✓ Sanded smooth
Colourful picture tiles
One picture for each letter. She matches the wooden A to the Apple tile, B to the Ball. Phonics through play, not drilling.
- ✓ Visual + tactile learning
- ✓ Reinforces letter sounds
- ✓ Builds simple words
Wooden base to hold it all
Letters stand in a wooden base so she can arrange them, see them, move them without them rolling away. Keeps the game tidy and focused.
- ✓ Stops letters getting lost
- ✓ Encourages neat arrangement
- ✓ Everything in one place

While they play
What grows quieter as she plays
Looks like play. Works like a lesson.
Letter recognition
She learns to name all 26 letters by sight and sound. The picture tiles anchor each letter to a word she already knows.
Phonics
She discovers that letters make sounds, and sounds make words. Handles the building blocks of reading before school demands them.
Spelling confidence
She learns to spell simple words by arranging letters herself. Not memorising. Building. Much harder to forget what you've made.
Focus without distraction
No notifications, no ads, no next-video autoplay. Just her and the puzzle until she solves it or walks away. Real focus.

Why real play matters
Real brain growth comes from real play.
The age it lands best
Older toddlers recognise shapes and colours; younger school-starters are ready for letter sounds. This game bridges that gap.
How long she'll sit with it
Long enough for you to have a cup of tea without guilt. Short enough that it stays exciting, not a chore.
How long it lasts
Solid wood doesn't splinter or break. She'll play it at 3, her cousin at 4, the next child at 5. One puzzle, three lifetimes.

Questions & answers
Questions parents actually ask
What age is this really for?
Best from 3-5, when letters start to matter and fingers can handle small pieces. A 6yo can play it; a 2yo will mouth the letters. If you're buying for a 4th birthday, this is the one. Check the age on your child's birthday card and you'll know.
Will it survive a second child?
Yes. Solid wood doesn't crack like plastic does. As long as you don't leave it in a puddle, it'll look the same when child two picks it up. That's why it costs more than the cheap set: you're not replacing it in two years. One puzzle, two or three kids, a decade of use. Worth every penny full price.
How do I know it's actually solid wood and not particle board?
Hold it. Solid wood has weight. When you pick up a letter, you feel it. Particle board is hollow and light. Our wood is hand-finished, so you'll see grain and colour variation, not a uniform plastic sheen. Not the usual tat from China: John A. Toys that don't break after five minutes of play: Karen Pepper.
What if it doesn't work for her?
Order by 2pm, arrives Tuesday. Play it for 30 days. If it's not landing, send it back by 31 January 2027 for a full refund. No questions. We offer 60-day returns because we know this works, but we also know every child is different.
How much does it cost?
The Educational Toy - Spelling Game is £18.99 today (down from £25.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.
What's your returns policy?
30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story
Making toys worth keeping since 1795.
Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.
When we started making toys in 1795, children learned by doing, not watching. A wooden letter was something you held, turned over, matched to a picture. Screens didn't exist. That's still how a child's brain learns best: through touch and play. This Spelling Game isn't a nostalgic throwback. It's neuroscience wrapped in solid wood. We make it because it works.
Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
