Sound familiar?

The Viking throwing game. Rules in five minutes. All afternoon to master.

Garden parties where everyone ends up on their phone because nobody can agree on a game.

Games that only work for one age group, while everyone else watches from the sideline.

Net-dependent or equipment-heavy lawn games that need a perfectly flat surface to work.

Games with a skill barrier so high that only experienced players actually enjoy them.

Kubb solves all of it. Ten kubbs, one king, six batons. Two teams. Rules take five minutes. Ages 6 to 60 play together and nobody sits out. It works on grass, gravel or uneven ground. The only thing it requires is a garden and an afternoon.

What families are saying about the Jaques Kubb Set

It was supposed to be a 20-minute warm-up. They played until it got dark.

★★★★★

"Played it at a family BBQ. My 7-year-old, my father-in-law, and everyone in between played it for two hours. Nobody needed to explain the rules twice. Best garden game we own."

★★★★★

"Much better than boules. The strategy element keeps adults properly engaged while kids love the throwing. Everyone is in it together — not just watching the adults play."

Rebecca✓ Verified purchase
★★★★★

"Solid wood, proper weight. Feels Viking-worthy. Still out on the lawn six months later. It has survived rain, sun, and two very competitive teenagers."

How Kubb works: three steps to topple the king

1

Set up the pitch

Place the 10 kubbs in two rows of five facing each other, with the king standing in the middle of the pitch.

2

Throw underarm

Teams take turns throwing batons underarm. Knock over the opposing team's kubbs before you can attack the king.

3

Topple the king

Once all the kubbs are down, aim for the king. First team to knock it over wins. Knock it over early and you lose.

Why it works

The garden game that brings every generation onto the same pitch.

Ages 6 to 96 on the Same Pitch

Kubb has no strength or speed requirement. The underarm throw levels the playing field. A 7-year-old and a grandfather compete as equals. Nobody watches from the sideline.

Tactical Enough for Adults

The field kubbs rule means strategy matters. Where you knock the kubbs, in what order, when you go for the king — Kubb rewards thinking. Adults stay genuinely invested every round.

No Flat Ground Needed

No net. No court markings required beyond the four corner pegs. Works on imperfect lawns, holiday sites, beaches and parks. Anywhere there is enough space to throw.

From families who play it every summer

It became a permanent fixture. We play it every time the family is together.

Three generations in the same garden, competing on equal terms. That is what Kubb does.

"My kids are 6 and 9, my parents are in their 70s. Kubb is the only game we own where all four of them are genuinely competing against each other. The grandparents win more often than you'd expect." Emma, mum of two
"It lives in the garden. I bought it two summers ago and it hasn't come inside once. My neighbours have borrowed it four times and ended up buying their own. That tells you everything." James, dad of three

Questions & answers

Everything people ask about Kubb

What age is Kubb suitable for?

Kubb works from age 6 upwards. The underarm throw means younger children can participate fully alongside adults without being at a disadvantage. There is no strength requirement. Children aged 6 to 10 typically learn the rules in under five minutes and compete on equal terms with adults from the first game.

What surface do you need to play Kubb?

Any reasonably flat outdoor surface works. Grass is ideal but Kubb plays perfectly well on gravel, compacted soil, sand, or a park lawn. You do not need a flat or specially prepared surface. The marking pegs keep the pitch defined regardless of what you are playing on.

How many players can play Kubb?

Kubb is played by two teams. Each team can have one to six players, making the game suitable for two players right up to twelve. The most popular configurations are two vs two or three vs three. Larger teams simply mean more players sharing the batons each round, which keeps the game moving and ensures nobody is standing around for long.

Does the Kubb Set come with a bag?

Yes. The Jaques Kubb Set includes a draw-string carry bag. Everything packs into the bag in under two minutes. It travels easily to parks, holiday sites, beaches and garden parties without any special packing or a box.

Is Kubb difficult to learn?

The core rules take five minutes to explain. Set up the kubbs, take turns throwing batons underarm, knock over the opposing team's kubbs, then aim for the king last. The field kubbs rule adds a tactical layer for experienced players but is easy to skip when playing with beginners or younger children. Most families are playing confidently within ten minutes of opening the bag.
