Real talk

Learning doesn't have to look like a lesson

You've seen the Montessori approach: children learn literacy best when letters are simply there, available, part of the space. These 80 magnetic letters live on your fridge. Your child notices them, moves them, spells words without being asked. No flash cards. No pressure. No screen time.

It's the Montessori principle that actually fits a normal home. And you get to be the parent who isn't running the activity, just noticing the learning happen.

What grows quietly while they play

Looks like play. Works like a lesson.

🔤

Alphabet recognition

Your child learns to identify every letter by shape, colour and sound. This is the foundation for reading.

✏️

Early spelling

Arranging letters to spell real words builds the link between sounds and how they're written.

🎨

Colour awareness

Each letter's bright colour reinforces recognition and makes learning feel more like play than a task.

🧠

Phonics foundation

Handling letters while hearing their sounds strengthens memory and prepares them for reading instruction at school.

Questions & answers

Questions from parents like you

Which age should I buy this for?

Ages 3-4 love the colours and moving the letters around. By 5-6, they start spelling real words. At 7, they're making sentences. So buy it when your child is 3 and it'll teach them right through to early primary school. Buying for a 5th birthday? This is the one.

Will the magnets hold? Won't they fall off?

No. The magnets are strong enough to hold securely on any standard fridge or magnetic board. Catherine McCulloch bought this for her baby's 1st birthday and told us: 'perfect gift'. John A said it best: 'Not the usual tat from China.' These are solid plastic, not flimsy. Karen Pepper: 'Toys that don't break after five minutes of play.' You're not gambling on quality here.

How quickly will it arrive if I'm buying for a birthday?

Order by 2pm and it arrives Tuesday. Our packaging is the bit parents praise most. It comes in our signature Jaques box, ready to wrap or gift as-is. Leigh Hemmings: 'arrived next day, saved Christmas.' We know birthday panic buying is real.

Is this worth the price compared to cheaper alphabet sets?

Yes. Manda Monium: 'worth every penny full price.' These letters last through multiple children because they're solid plastic, not hollow, and the magnets don't weaken. You'll use them for years. Pass them on. That's pennies per year. The cheaper sets break in weeks. You're buying once, not replacing.

How much does it cost?

The Magnetic Letters - Alphabet Magnets is £9.26 today (down from £18.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.

What's your returns policy?

30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story

Making toys worth keeping since 1795.

Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.

We made these letters because Montessori was right: children learn to read when letters are simply present, available, part of their everyday space. For 231 years, Jaques has watched how children actually learn, away from pressure. These 80 magnetic letters sit on your fridge and do the teaching quietly, the way learning works best. No setup. No managed activity. Just letters, a child, and the alphabet happening naturally.

Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
