Real talk
The backgammon set you buy once, not twice a year.
You know the feeling: cheap board splits, plastic pieces crack, the whole thing lands in the charity pile. This one doesn't. Hand-stitched tan leather, weighted counters that feel right in your hand, a solid wood board that rolls up neat. It's the kind of thing you buy at 40 and your grandchild inherits at 60.
No assembly. No learning curve. Unroll it, pour the pieces, and play. That's it.
Joe Jaques, Jaques of London

While they play
What backgammon quietly teaches.
Looks like play. Works like a lesson.
Strategy
Every move changes the board. You learn to think three moves ahead, weigh risk against reward. That's not a game mechanic, that's life.
Memory
Track dice, remember moves, spot patterns. Backgammon is fast enough to stay fun, complex enough that you get better after 20 games.
Probability
Dice teach odds without maths textbooks. You start to see patterns in randomness. Kids absorb this naturally over play.
Patience
No screens, no rush, no ding. Just you, an opponent, and a game that takes as long as it takes. Rare now.

Why real play matters
Real brain growth comes from real play.
Real materials. You feel it.
John A bought one, opened it, and knew. Solid leather stitches, weighted counters that won't scatter, board that doesn't warp after six months of play.
Built for actual use.
Karen Pepper's set rolls, plays, and survives. No cracks, no loose pieces. The kind of thing that outlasts the generation that buys it.
Heirloom maths.
Manda Monium does the sums: played 100 times a year for 20 years is 2,000 games. Pennies per game. Buy it once, forget about it forever.
Why this matters right now

Questions & answers
Questions before you buy.
Is this actually solid wood? What kind?
Yes. The board frame is solid wood with hand-stitched tan leather on top. The counters are weighted plastic (not hollow), and the dice are solid. It's built to absorb years of play, not look nice in a box.
How long will it last?
We've shipped these for decades. Leather softens with age, which players like. The stitching holds because it's stitched, not glued. Most owners tell us they've had theirs for 10-20 years and still play weekly. It's not a disposable thing.
Is it really portable, or is it too heavy?
It rolls to about 30cm long, 8cm across. Fits a cabin bag or a weekend bag easily. Weight (about 800g) is part of the deal: it's heavy enough to stay put on the table, light enough to carry. That's the engineering.
What if I hate it?
You have 60 days to return it, until 31 January 2027. If the leather isn't what you hoped or the game doesn't click, send it back. No fight.
How much does it cost?
The Travel Backgammon Set - Roll-up Leather Backgammon Board is £60.99 today (down from £74.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.
What's your returns policy?
30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story
Making toys worth keeping since 1795.
Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.
We made the first Jaques backgammon set in 1795, which means we've watched what survives and what doesn't. This travel set takes what players actually want, leather that ages well, pieces that don't rattle, a board that rolls tight, and strips away everything else. No branding on the outside, no overwrought design. Just a game that plays the same way in 1995 as it does today. That's Jaques.
Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
Joe, Jaques of London
