Real talk

The game that keeps them off the tablet and gets you playing.

Saturday afternoon doesn't need a plan B anymore. Roll the soft ball, watch the wooden skittles scatter across the lawn, and hand the ball back. No rules to explain, no setup beyond standing 9 pins upright. Kids aged 1 and up roll. Bigger kids aim. Parents get twenty minutes of undivided attention.

You'll notice it straight away: they're giggling, you're not glancing at your phone, and by next weekend they'll be asking if the skittles are coming out again.

Joe Jaques, Jaques of London

While they play

What they're quietly building as they play.

Looks like play. Works like a lesson.

🎯

Hand-eye coordination

Rolling the ball at the pins teaches aim and timing. Happens naturally, no instruction needed.

🔢

Counting and colours

Nine different colours to spot. Counting how many pins fall. Pattern recognition that sticks.

💪

Fine motor skills

Gripping the ball, standing pins upright, rolling with control. Builds strength and precision without feeling like work.

🧠

Confidence and focus

Watching themselves succeed builds confidence. Rolling again teaches focus. Both happen in the space of 20 minutes.

Why real play matters

Real brain growth comes from real play.

Unbox it, set it up.

No pieces missing, no assembly. Wooden pins, soft ball, and you're ready. Takes 2 minutes.

→

Roll and knock.

Toddlers roll. Bigger kids aim. Everyone plays by their own rules. That's the point.

→

Play every weekend.

Hand-finished solid wood lasts for years. Pass it on, play it with cousins, use it indoors when the weather turns.

Questions & answers

Questions parents ask before they buy.

Is it really suitable for a 1-year-old?

Yes. At 1, they'll roll the soft ball and watch the pins fall. At 3, they'll aim. At 6, they'll beat you. Catherine McCulloch says it's a perfect gift for any babies' 1st birthday, and she's right. The soft ball is safe, the pins are light enough for small hands to stand back up, and there are no small pieces to choke on.

How quickly does it arrive?

Ships within 2-3 business days. Order by 2pm, arrives Tuesday. If you're buying for a birthday and Saturday's coming fast, this solves it. Leigh Hemmings got theirs next day and saved Christmas, so we know it moves.

Will it survive rough play in the garden?

Solid wood, hand-finished, weighted base. The pins stay upright in the wind, handle being knocked about, and last for years. Families pass them on to cousins. The soft ball won't damage your walls or windows, so indoor play is fine too.

Why is this more expensive than the plastic set at the supermarket?

Solid wood, hand-finished by real people, lasts 10+ years, and you'll actually play with it every Saturday. Manda Monium says it's worth every penny full price, and cost-per-year, she's right. Play it for 5 years with 2 kids and pass it on: that's a few quid per game.

How much does it cost?

The Colourful Baby Skittles is £15.99 today (down from £26.99). Klarna is available at checkout if you prefer to spread the cost.

What's your returns policy?

30 days, full refund, no conditions. Return it for any reason and we refund in full. We've been standing behind what we make since 1795.

Our story

Making toys worth keeping since 1795.

Jaques of London was founded in 1795. We invented croquet, table tennis, and the Staunton chess set. For 230 years, we've been making things that pull children away from passive entertainment and into active, curious, hands-on play.

Jaques has been making games since 1795. We started with chess sets and croquet sets for Victorian lawns, and we haven't stopped. The Colourful Baby Skittles is that same DNA: solid wood, hand-finished, built to be played with every weekend and passed on when you're done. It's not just a toy. It's a Saturday afternoon that actually happens, year after year.

Toys and games that leave something behind: a skill, a memory, a piece of play that gets passed on.
