Montessori Toys that Grow Great Young Minds

Keeping the kids entertained is no easy task! With tots constantly trying for our attention, it’s easy to slip into a routine of popping toddlers in front of the TV for peace and quiet.

However, research suggests that ‘’real play’’ can engage your little learner’s just as well! Some studies state that engaging playfully is actually better for your kid’s cognitive development.

So, read on to find out all about Montessori methods and the effects of screen time.

The Montessori Story

If you didn’t know, ‘’Montessori’’ toys encourage your kids to explore the world around them. Play is vital to the Montessori approach, as your children learn by touching and playing with objects. Montessori Toys are usually ones kids can hold and touch. This is because it helps your little ones to develop fine motor skills.

Here at Jaques of London, we specialise in traditionally wooden Montessori toys.

Our family mission is to produce toys of the highest quality and that are packed full of educational benefits. When children spend their playtime in front of a screen, their passive enjoyment of what is on the screen interferes with their ability to be active in play.

Health and Happiness

Does screen time hinder our kid’s development? It is true that TV’s and computers entertain our kids, but their mind and body are not being used. It is because of this that experts have identified a link between screen time and obesity. When staring at screens, kids are inactive and tend to snack.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states children under 1 year of age should:

  • be physically active several times a day in a variety of ways
  • Have no screen time and should be "engaged in reading and storytelling with a caregiver".

Evidence suggests that screen time has a negative effect on our children's weight, movement abilities, cognitive abilities, sleep duration and fitness.

 Toys to try

So, I hear you ask, what is the solution?  We suggest that you should follow the WHO’s guidelines on screen time. If you would like to know more, you can read all about it here.

Montessori Toys are perfect for childhood development. We recommend toys that are hands-on and designed specifically for motor skills development. Also, look for toys that will stimulate your child’s senses and contribute to their educational development.
