The parlour game invented by Jaques London originally as Gossima was rechristened Ping-Pong by John Jaques III and is now, with its present title of Table Tennis, the most popular racket sport in the world.

In 1901, baseball’s American League declared itself a major league; in England, another bat and ball sport was gaining popularity with the production of the first Ping-Pong tables by Jaques.
Most people think Ping-Pong balls are made of plastic – they are in fact made from celluloid, the same material that makes up photographic film.
The Jaques family has had the satisfaction of seeing two of its inventions played at the Olympics: Croquet in 1900, and Table tennis from 1988 up to the forthcoming 2012 Olympics in London.
The fast pace of Ping-Pong led it to be banned in Russia during the early 20th century, as it was thought that the speed of play would damage the players eyesight.
Expert players have been recorded hitting Ping-Pong balls at over 70mph, traversing the length of the table in less than a 1/10th of a second.

His entrepenurial instinct was correct: in 1902-03 the game of Ping Pong swept the country, and it soon developed into a fully fledged sport, with clubs and tournaments appearing all over the world.
