Originally marketed by Jaques as 'Gossima', it attracted little attention from the public. However, John Jaques III saw the potential in the game, and rechristened it Ping Pong, after the noise the balls make during a game. His entrepenurial instinct was correct: in 1902-03 the game of Ping Pong swept the country, and it soon developed into a fully fledged sport, with clubs and tournaments appearing all over the world. Ping Pong, or Table Tennis as it is often called nowadays, is an olympic sport played by over 300 million people worldwide.
