John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.
Established in 1795, Jaques London is one of a handful of companies over 200 years old still in the hands of the original owner’s family.
Jaques London might not exist today if not for the miraculous survival of the original Jaques pattern book, the blueprint for every game ever made by the company, when the London factory was destroyed in the Blitz.
Giant Dominoes
Jaques were making Dominoes sets and game tiles as early as 1795. The game features in our early pattern books and it would appear that they were almost certainly made from ivory. Standard domino sets today include 28 pieces, each of which has of a line dividing it into two squares and a number of spots (or 'pips') in each square end.
