Cheltenham Croquet Set

The introduction of croquet in 1851 at the Great Exhibition won John Jaques II a Gold medal and a place in sporting history.
As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones.
Croquet hoops are a mere 1/8” wider than the standard croquet ball – a far cry from early days of the sport, where player Arthur Law’s spaniel could slip through with ease.
John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.

Croquet has reached the ends of the earth – in 2005 a group of American scientists became the first to play the game at the South Pole.
The game of Croquett invented by John Jaques II in 1851 has spawned many variations, including ‘extreme croquet’, where the smooth lawns of the 19th century are replaced by a rugged landscape of streams and potholes.

Six player Cheltenham Set

The Jaques family have supplied eight or six player croquet sets to most of England’s stately homes over the years, and this set has a special claim to fame as it was this model that Lady Diana Spencer was given as a wedding present on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Charles, after she had put it on her wedding list.

The Cheltenham croquet Set has six competition mallets; three Challenge models with Rockwood heads scored on the striking faces, with hickory gripped handles, and three Oxford models fitted with brass rings, made of English sports ash; all reflecting the fine quality of all Jaques of London croquet equipment. There are six scored, matched Challenge balls, and a set of the special heavyweight Hampton hoops which closely mimic the weight of Association competition hoops. The hoop smasher mallet helps drive the hoops into position after their sites have been carefully watered. There is a six player coloured, gold lined competition winning post with a fitted top peg which accommodates the six hoop clips which are attached to the hoops during play to record a players progress round the court. The colourful steel corner flags set off the court beautifully, and the ball markers record a balls position. Jaques instruction booklet 'The Basic Rules of Croquet', which also has much tactical advice and historical information completes the set. The set is presented in an authentic green coloured natural pine box with steel plated reinforced corners, lockdown enamelled metal closures, and a tanned leather Jaques' logo. This lovely six player Cheltenham croquet set will grace and enhance any beautiful lawn.
