Association Croquet Set

The introduction of croquet in 1851 at the Great Exhibition won John Jaques II a Gold medal and a place in sporting history.
As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones.
Croquet hoops are a mere 1/8” wider than the standard croquet ball – a far cry from early days of the sport, where player Arthur Law’s spaniel could slip through with ease.
John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.

Croquet has reached the ends of the earth – in 2005 a group of American scientists became the first to play the game at the South Pole.
The game of Croquett invented by John Jaques II in 1851 has spawned many variations, including ‘extreme croquet’, where the smooth lawns of the 19th century are replaced by a rugged landscape of streams and potholes.

Association Quality Set

Croquet’s early surge in popularity during Victorian and Edwardian times, following it’s introduction at the 1851 Great Exhibition, declined somewhat during the time of the two World Wars, but slowly grew again until about 20 years ago, when several of these Association sets were provided by the Company for a series of Croquet Seminars at the Croquet Association headquarters in London. The subsequent recent growth in the popularity of the game can be traced back to this time.

The Association croquet set has all the components for top level competition croquet, but is also ideal in a garden setting, where it is equally suitable for the shorter golf croquet game. The quality croquet set mallets are hand made by Jaques craftsmen from sustainable tropical hardwood with carefully fitted brass rings and cane spliced hickory handles with superfeel Takair grips. The matched regulation balls are fitted in a lovely canvas carry case, and the hoops are the Association models, chosen for all Croquet Association tournaments. There are regulation Championship corner flags and yard line pegs, hoop clips, ball markers, and a regulation, beautifully finished winning post. The quality croquet set is contained in a polished green traditional reinforced box, with comprehensive rules and Anton Gill’s superb book, 'Croquet the Complete Guide'. A mouth watering set to lust over!
