The introduction of croquet in 1851 at the Great Exhibition won John Jaques II a Gold medal and a place in sporting history.
As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones.
Croquet hoops are a mere 1/8” wider than the standard croquet ball – a far cry from early days of the sport, where player Arthur Law’s spaniel could slip through with ease.
John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.

Croquet has reached the ends of the earth – in 2005 a group of American scientists became the first to play the game at the South Pole.
The game of Croquett invented by John Jaques II in 1851 has spawned many variations, including ‘extreme croquet’, where the smooth lawns of the 19th century are replaced by a rugged landscape of streams and potholes.

Hurlingham Croquet Set

Jaques made a set similar to this in the days of the British Raj, and supplied it to Indian potentates through the East India Company. To go with their Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts, we even made sets for the Maharajahs. A famous one even had solid ivory mallets.

This fine Hurlingham croquet set in a box continues this famous tradition, a reputation gained over many decades. The set contains two each of our Colonial and Laser Tuftex LV mallets, the Laser Tuftex models featuring a new protective face material developed by the company over the last few years, the Colonial models harking back to those earlier times and still made to the same famous design. Matched Championship balls in a smart canvas carrier and Association cast iron hoops and hoop drill are the finest available, together with Championship corner flags and yard line pegs, a hoop smasher mallet and a gold lined, colour banded winning post to show order of play. Enamelled metal hoop clips and ball markers complete the set, with Jaques' basic rules and instructions for croquet and golf croquet, the Official Croquet Association Rules, and Anton Gill’s lovely illustrated book on the history of croquet which also has a wealth of other information and tactical advice. The set is presented in a beautiful polished solid mahogany cabinet which will, with care, last a lifetime.
