The introduction of croquet in 1851 at the Great Exhibition won John Jaques II a Gold medal and a place in sporting history.
As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones.
Croquet hoops are a mere 1/8” wider than the standard croquet ball – a far cry from early days of the sport, where player Arthur Law’s spaniel could slip through with ease.
John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.

The Game of Croquet is played with equipment and is a challenging and enjoyable sport. Croquet succesfully combinines the need for tactical ability, judgment and skill in equal measure.
