The introduction of croquet in 1851 at the Great Exhibition won John Jaques II a Gold medal and a place in sporting history.
As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones.
Croquet hoops are a mere 1/8” wider than the standard croquet ball – a far cry from early days of the sport, where player Arthur Law’s spaniel could slip through with ease.
John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.

Jaques Oxford ash mallet is hand made from solid English sports ash. Choosing a mallet is never easy as the mallet is probably the most important part of a player’s armoury. Many experienced players prefer a slightly heavier mallet and to this end this model is fitted with brass rings, which add weight while helping protect the mallet faces from damage by mis-hit shots. It features a unique wedging system developed by the Jaques family, and has a traditional octagonal handle, which helps a player feel correct alignment of the mallet in play. The mallet faces are scored with concentric rings, which aid the playing of stop shots and follow through roll shots. Size 37in (94cm) overall, with a 9in (23cm) x 3in (7.5cm) head.
