The introduction of croquet in 1851 at the Great Exhibition won John Jaques II a Gold medal and a place in sporting history.
As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones.
Croquet hoops are a mere 1/8” wider than the standard croquet ball – a far cry from early days of the sport, where player Arthur Law’s spaniel could slip through with ease.
John Jaques II’s game of Croquet took the world by storm, with matches in far flung Russian provinces to Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet playing on the White House lawn.

Croquet has reached the ends of the earth – in 2005 a group of American scientists became the first to play the game at the South Pole.
The game of Croquett invented by John Jaques II in 1851 has spawned many variations, including ‘extreme croquet’, where the smooth lawns of the 19th century are replaced by a rugged landscape of streams and potholes.

In the early days, in the late 19th century, the Association mallet was Jaques most popular top of the range model. It has changed very little since those times, and is still our most popular brass ringed, round head competition mallet. In the mid 20th century John Solomon was undisputed world champion for over 20 years with his famous square head Solomon mallet, and square head mallets became the vogue amongst professionals. However, easier central striking, which translates into a more accurate straight line trajectory of the ball is achieved with a round head mallet, and many serious players still choose this traditional style. The mallet has a 9in (23cm) x 3in (7.5cm) Rockwood head fitted with brass rings, which help add weight and protect the mallet faces from damage by mis-hit shots. The striking faces are grooved concentrically to aid grip on the ball, in a similar way to some golf clubs, helping a player create good stop shots and roll shots. The hickory octagonal handle is spliced with Malacca cane, giving extra spring to the shot, and is fitted with a superb Carbotec grip. This model also includes Jaques' patented Roller design, helping the player adopt a low grip when playing roll shots. The mallet is normally produced to about 3lb, generally the most popular weight. Slightly heavier or lighter weights are usually available.
