Spassky and Fischer Commemorative set
Jaques of London's famous Staunton chessmen design, first produced in 1849, can be considered one of the more influential events to occur in the history of modern chess. The iconic designs, brought to John Jaques II by Nathaniel Cooke, proprietor of the Illustrated London News, were an instant hit and garnered praise from all corners of the chess world. They were so good that Mr Howard Staunton, the first British Chess World Champion and eminent chess critic, agreed to have his name and signature authenticate every single box sold. Nowadays the Staunton chessmen have established themselves as the set of choice for the private player to the world champion. Nothing illustrates the high regard Jaques' chessmen are held in than their use in the 1972 World Championship between Fischer and Spassky - dubbed the 'Match of the Century' by commentators. Over the course of a month the two great players battled, until finally the American prevailed and became the Champion of the World of chess. This finely turned Fischer Commemorative set, our 1972 Fischer Spassky 3.5" Chess set, comes in an attractive beech presentation box complete with brass furniture and baize lined interior. A great chess set to commerate one of the great chess matches.
