Gaye Pitman had a clear win in her singles (including a break of 8 hoops) but the other two games were closer tussles.
The other singles game was an example that Croquet is indeed a sport for all ages. Teenager, Tom Knight (handicap 2) played Windsor’s Tony McNamara (handicap 5) who is many decades his senior. With three bisques (extra shots) up his sleeve, McNamara was the victor, 26 -15 in yet another game of friendly rivalry between the two.
After a slow start by both sides in the doubles, Stephens Croquet Club’s David Tulip established a handy lead with a break of 7 hoops and this was followed by a break of 5 hoops by his partner, Heather Knight. Play went to the full two and a half hours with the Stephens combination winning 19 - 11.
Also, there are a couple of events ahead on our club calendar.
Stephens Croquet Club has been hosting its Easter Tournament for Association Croquet (handicap play) for over thirty years and it is on once again on Saturday and Sunday (3rd and 4th April) of the Easter weekend. A more recent addition to the calendar is the Golf Croquet Doubles (Egyptian Format) tournament on Monday 5th.
The public is welcome to come and watch on any of the days of the tournaments. Play starts at 8.30 am and refreshments will be available.
A state-wide ‘Try Croquet’ day is planned for Sunday, 30th May and Stephens Croquet Club will welcome potential players and the “simply curious” to come and try Croquet from 2 to 5 pm.
